Here at Grace, it is our desire for everyone to have a right and growing relationship with God. We believe that God's purpose for people is for them to glorify Him and enjoy a right relationship with Him forever. However, before a relationship can grow it must begin. How can a person begin a relationship with God that will last forever? What is eternal life? How can one know for sure that he has it?
Eternal life means to live with God in heaven forever. It is the opposite of everlasting punishment. "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16).
Eternal life comes only through the Lord Jesus Christ. "... how can we know the way? Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" (John 14:5-6).
Eternal life is a gift that must be received, not worked for. "For by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Eternal life is received by understanding and believing what God has said and asking Him to save you from your sins. You must understand and believe these four things:
1. You have sinned and broken God's holy law. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).
2. Because of this, you deserve eternal separation from God. "For the wages of sin is death..." (Romans 6:23a).
3. You cannot do anything to pay for your sins or save yourself. "Know that a man is not justified (made right with God) by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ" (Galatians 2:16).
4. Only the Lord Jesus Christ is able to save you from your sins. "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on Him" (John 3:36).
What should you do? "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Romans 10:9, 13).
